英文摘要
The realities of global warming as well as the overall increases in oil prices have triggered a movement primarily in the Americas and Europe to replace part of the fossil fuel reliance with renewable fuels. One of the most important predicted long-term solutions is to use cellulose rather than starch and and oil as source material. However, there are several problems with the use of cellulosic biomass for ethanol production, in particular, the high abundance of lignin, an abundant aromatic polymer that surrounds and prevents enzymatic access to cellulose. The aim of the proposed research is to generate hybrid poplar varieties with a reduced lignin content that are more suitable for transportation biofuel and paper production than present varieties.
