Modern electrical power systems are large-scale systems with a high degree of complexity and nonlinearity. Fast switching power electronic apparatus are widely used for various applications at the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization levels. The design and development of digital controllers and protection equipment for such applications is a complex process which involves repeated testing in an expensive facility. Currently, the only cost-effective method to perform such testing is real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation, in which the device-under-test is physically interfaced with a real-time simulator that accurately models the power system with embedded power electronic apparatus.
