The objective of the RTI proposal is to support my newly awarded Discovery Grant research program on advanced automotive belt drive systems of micro hybrid vehicles. Micro hybrid vehicles are a type of hybrid vehicles closest to the conventional vehicles. In micro hybrid vehicles, an advanced accessory belt drive system will be introduced in which the alternator is replaced by a new electric device called Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). ISG functions as both a starter and a generator, replacing the two separate units in conventional vehicles. A car equipped with an ISG will automatically shut off the engine during idling and quickly restart the engine as the acceleration pedal is depressed. It is estimated that the use of ISG can potentially cut fuel consumption by up to 10% and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15%.
