TARGETED METABOLOMICS or "fluxomics" using multiple tracers labeled with stable isotopes is a powerful approach to determining metabolic responses to changes in nutrition, developmental state and disease. Amino acid tracers labeled with stable isotopes are infused in animals and humans to follow the flow of amino acids through critical pathways. Then their allocation into different tissue pools, the rates of synthesis of specific proteins and other products are determined. These specific and dynamic measures provide more important information than concentration measurements alone in much the same way that analysis of cash flow and expenditures provide more useful financial information than "cash-on-hand."
