The ability to perform high-throughout and variable-volume solvent evaporation and associated concentration is essential for the preparation of materials to be subjected to metabolite analysis by high performance liquid or gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A Savant Integrated Speedvac System is requested by five research groups involved in the routine identification and quantification of amino acids, organic acids, gamma-hydroxybutyrate, flavonoids, anthocyanins, polyphenols, carbohydrates and carotenoids. The two Speedvacs currently in use are 24-28 years old and over time they have become less efficient and unreliable. A non-repairable malfunction will stop or seriously impair the research progress of over 33 students, post-doctoral fellows and technicians. The equipment is necessary to make scientific progress in several areas:
