Mechanical tester for polymeric materials

This proposal is for the purchase of an Instron bi-axial mechanical tester with both Biopuls and an environmental chamber for mechanical property characterizations of synthetic materials at the University of Ottawa. The proposed equipment will be used for a wide range of research projects amongst multiple research groups across a wide range of disciplines, including: 1) tack and peel strength measurements for pressure-sensitive adhesives; 2) characterization of degradable biomaterial scaffolds for nerve regeneration after spinal cord injuries; 3) mechanical testing applications in cardiovascular research; 4) polymeric membrane characterization in fuel cell research; and 5) the development of soft biomimetic hydrogels for applications in artificial corneas.
