The cycling of soil carbon (C) is a fundamental characteristic that defines the functioning of any ecosystem. My research program deals with assessing the factors and mechanisms controlling the cycling of soil C. This allows us to study a diversity of ecological and environmental situations such as greenhouse gas emissions, over-browsing by herbivores, and the ability of ecosystems to resist environment stress, to name but a few. The methodological approach we most frequently use are soil respirometry measurements of various kinds. This requires an instrument referred to as a Gas Chromatograph (GC). This grant proposal is intended to replace a 10-y-old GC that has become the centerpiece of our lab, but is currently broken and irreparable.
