The proposed research program is centred on the ongoing development and application of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) to the microanalysis of natural materials. The key applications proposed encompass a number of subfields of current interest to the investigator i) Ore Deposits Geochemistry, ii) Paleoceanographic Proxies in Marine Biomineralization, and iii) Stable Isotope Systematics of Subduction-Related Volcanism. The SIMS techniques developed for these programs also have manifold additional applications within the general field of Geosciences. The research approach will emphasize the unique capabilities of SIMS for very fine spatial resolution and precise trace element and stable isotopic microanalysis of solids. The glass and mineral reference materials developed in support of this program will also benefit and promote additional collegial use of the Memorial University SIMS Facility, and other microanalytical facilities in the geosciences community.
