Recently, there has been an increasing amount of social and political pressure placed on transport industries, in particular aviation, to reduce their impact on the environment and contribution to global warming. Active flow control has been identified as a key factor to produce the paradigm shift required to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards on emissions, while sustaining economical growth. The overarching aim of the proposed research is to investigate fundamental fluid mechanics, dynamical systems and control issues in order to improve flow characteristics (e.g. lower drag) via feedback control. The primary focus of the present proposal is concerned with actuation issues for the purpose of cancelling the instability that leads to bypass transition in a laminar boundary layer.
