The proposed research combines the expertise of McGill University in advanced computational procedures for dynamic analysis of cable structures, with the experimental expertise of IREQ (Hydro Québec Research Institute) in cable vibration measurements. The goal is to develop, validate and test an accurate modeling procedure to study the dynamic response of flexible guyed transmission towers with due consideration of conductor-tower-foundation-soil interactions. Calibrated numerical models will serve to develop vibration mitigation solutions for high voltage line supports exposed to severe combined wind and atmospheric icing loads. Hydro Québec's short-term need is the mitigation of vibrations in guy wires which cause fatigue in rock anchor rods, thus reducing their useful life with potential premature and unpredictable failure.
