Using photocatalytic processes enhanced by nanotechnology, the project (in the long term) sets out to demonstrate the viability of using customized nanoarchitecture and a specialized mix of nanostructured titania materials for converting large volumes of CO2 into fuels. This project employs an unconventional approach towards carbon capture; the primary goal is not to sequester the CO2 in the ground but to use CO2 as a feedstock for sustainable energy production. The principal objective of this exploratory project is to improve the harvesting of solar radiation for photocatalysis by doped TiO2 nanotube arrays. Environmental Compliance Incorporated (ECI) is a for-profit company which originates carbon offsets (specialized in energy efficiencies) in the voluntary market in Alberta. The company has developed the Energy Rebate - Carbon Offset Program to enable commercial facility owners and operators to register their emission reductions (CO2e) and to be compensated for specified energy efficiency activities. This proposal brings together ECI, in partnership with the University of Alberta, to conduct research and develop commercialization opportunities with regard to photocatalytic nanostructures which would serve as artificial carbon sinks.
