Funds are requested for the urgent replacement of a confocal fluorescence microscope system that affords a core instrumental capability for determination of the structure and reaction dynamics within very thin films. Krull's research program focuses on the design of chemically-selective surfaces for development of biosensors and bioassays that operate by measuring fluorescence intensity. These technologies use selective probes that are immobilized directly to a surface so that binding of target in a bio-recognition event can provide for a localized measurable analytical signal. When combined with microfluidic flow control, such technology can offer outstanding selectivity, and can reduce the time for complete reaction of the probe material from several hours to several minutes.
