Inflammation is body's defense response to biological and chemical insults and underlies many diseases including those of the lung. Respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, influenza and asthma stress the human healthcare system with billions of dollars ever year. Respiratory diseases of domestic animals such as bacterial pneumonia in cattle cost more than a billion dollars per year in lost production and mortality to cattle industry in North America. There is a concerted ongoing effort to delineate mechanisms of these inflammatory diseases and to identify novel targets for treatment and prevention.
