Our group studies factors that affect human-computer interaction and the fundamental ability of humans to integrate sensory information for action. The present proposal seeks funding to purchase a sophisticated haptics virtual reality workstation, which includes a robotic force-feedback interface that will allow us to explore a) the abilities of humans to interact with virtual environments in three dimensions, and b) the brain mechanisms underlying the integration of perception and action to attain this level of skilled performance. Findings from this work will be relevant to industrial, medical, and fundamental scientific applications. These applications include telemetric machine operation, telerobotic surgery, and neuroprosthetic control/brain machine interface technology development.
