Natural user interfaces enable users to interact with computers via touch, spoken commands, and gestures. They have been hailed as the next evolutionary step in human-computer interaction. Such interfaces promise to make it even easier to interact with technical systems. An example is pointing to a lamp and issuing a command to turn it on, instead of using the indirect means of a light switch. Flowton Technologies has developed a new platform for natural user interfaces. Given that recognition technologies are not perfect in general, the main usability problems center on the failure cases and, more importantly, the reaction of users to such errors. This central issue will determine the viability of the final product. Flowton has experimented with various feedback methods, but has not been able to determine an effective solution.
