Cooling services are estimated to consume 15% of total worldwide energy consumption. Furthermore, in the residential sector alone, space and water heating account for approximately 80% of energy use. The technology used for these services is based on compression and expansion of a fluid. With decades of development, efficiencies have improved and energy intensities have decreased; however, these are mature technologies and additional improvements are more difficult to find. New cycles using magnetic materials have the potential for high efficiency, power density, and the use of benign materials. The goals of this research are the development of compact, efficient, and environmentally benign refrigerators, heat pumps, and gas liquefiers.
