The research activity will focus on the processing of two important classes of new polymer materials: polymer blends and polymer nanocomposites. Polymer blends are attractive to industry because they exhibit better properties than individual components and are less expensive than synthesizing a new polymer. Polymer nanocomposites consist of inorganic particles with dimensions in the nanoscale (1-100nm) like metal nanowires, clay nanoplatelets or carbon nanotubes, dispersed inside an organic polymer matrix. Polymer blends and nanocomposites have commercial importance in a large number of applications such as in electronics, automotive, aerospace, photovoltaics, biomedical, packaging, sensors, catalysis, fuel cells, and solar cells.
