The realistic appearance of objects is strongly influenced by how light behaves with (i.e. on and under) its surface. Light transport depends of various physical properties of the surface. In computer graphics, they are mostly modeled by geometrical optics, such as the distribution of its meso- and micro-structures, each structure having its own physical properties. This hierarchy of scales for a surface is a fundamental concept; it distinguishes an object from its surface. However when observed from different distances and view angles, this appearance can have a highly non-linear visual behavior.
