Smooth muscle is found in all hollow organs of the body, e.g. airways, intestine, blood vessels. The ability of smooth muscle cells to generate force and motion, in turn constricting the organ in which they exist, is crucial for the normal functioning of the human organism. In fact, diseases such as hypertension and asthma are often associated with abnormal smooth muscle cell contractility.
