String theory is the best avenue currently available for studying quantum gravity, as other extant approaches lack the same degree of richness and technical solidity computationally. One of the most important ideas to come out of string theory was the AdS/CFT correspondence, which posits a holographic duality between string theories on asymptotically AdS spaces in higher dimensions and gauge quantum field theories in lower dimensions. The reach of AdS/CFT duality has expanded beyond CFTs to wider classes of relativistic QFTs of interest in particle physics, and even to phenomenological RHIC models and nonrelativistic cousins potentially relevant to condensed matter systems.
