The study of functional imidazolium-based supramolecular architectures gives rise to emerging opportunities in chemistry, but also bridges the gap between organic and supramolecular systems in an effort to fully understand the driving forces used to assemble these units in different hierarchies. Imidazolium cation is a critical building block common to the three projects described in this proposal, comprising a research program that spans the disciplines of organic, bioorganic and materials chemistry. Supramolecular assemblies require the construction and manipulation of complex molecular architectures of nanometer-sized dimensions.
