This research will improve our understanding of the production of the largest class of natural products (isoprenoids/terpenoids) in plants. Specifically, we will study how essential oils are produced in the glandular trichomes, or oil glands, of higher plants. Our focus is on lavenders (Lavandula) because these plants provide valuable essential oils used in cosmetics, personal care products and alternative medicines, and are noteworthy emerging crops in Canada.
