Cannabis sativa (marijuana) plants bearing only female flowers (female plants) are cultivated for theproduction of cannabinoids (a group of psychoactive plant specialized metabolites typified by THC). However, female cannabis flowers can develop male organs (revert) in response to environmental ques, hormonal signals, and stress. Pollen from these induced male flowers fertilizes female flowers leading to a significant reductionin cannabinoid production. The main objectives of this research are to develop a database of genes that controlflower development in cannabis plants, and identify those responsible for flower reversion.
