Graphite used in our pencil leads consists of several sheets of graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms. Like tiles in a mosaic, graphene platelets can be tessellated and form large-area transparent and conducting monolayers, which can be cost-effectively prepared by solution-processing suspensions of platelets in water or organic solvents. An individual graphene layer can be rolled-up to form carbon nanotubes, cylinders of a few nanometer diameters, which also possess excellent electrical transport properties. Large-area networks of carbon nanotubes can also be prepared by solution-processing.
