The proposed technology involves the development ofnovel compounds capable ofBOTH natural gas sweetening and Carbon Capture from industrial waste streams, using green solvents such as ionic liquids (ILS) or polymeric solvents (PS). If successful, these compounds would allow an inexpensive and effective method for the capture of C02 emissions from the oil and gas industries. Current methods for the removal of C02 are expensive and can often only be applied in limited circumstances. For example, use of glycol or methanol systems have been shown to effectively capture C02 acidic gas in natural gas sweetening, but can not be effectively used in flue gas streams due to the presence ofoxygen and other contaminants. We propose to develop a new and innovative acidic gas capture system engineered to serve a dual purpose, being effective on offshore platforms (production) and where large amounts of natural gas are consumed onshore (post-combustion). Developing a new system that integrates our proposed solution for removing carbon dioxide from natural gas, pre-and post-combustion, would make Nova Scotia a leader in carbon capture and also provide opportunities to apply the technology locally to secondary industries such as manufacturing and chemical production. Development of research strengths and infrastructure focused on handling and using C02 is a major component ofthe green economy as well as a major thrust in enhanced gas and oil recovery research Finally, Saint Mary's has formed the Maritimes Center for Green Chemistry (MCGC) to increase the awareness and impact ofapplied research in the area of Green Chemistry. Our initiative will position Nova Scotia among the leaders in this cutting edge research, both nationally and internationally.
