Canada is the world's twelfth-largest producer of honey. However, the Canadian honey bee colony wintering losses ranged from 24%-45% in 2009 and 2010. This has been generally attributed to Colony Collapse Disease (CCD). To prevent the disease and identify unhealthy bee colony, a major part of a beekeeper's work day is spent on visually inspecting the bee hive box frames. However, the visual inspection work is very time-consuming, expensive and not very accurate due to environmental distractions.
