The goal of this project is to develop a new insecticide synergist that is more potent than the currently used piperonyl butoxide (PBO) by generating and evaluating derivatives readily obtainable from the natural products dillapiol and seesamol. If successful, this will reduce substantially the quantities of insecticide needed to control insect pests. These synergists inhibit the cytochrome P450 enzymes which insects use to metabolize and eliminate the insecticide. Preliminary results have yielded derivatives that are 30 -100 times more potent than PBO. The best inhibitors, identified by in vitro assays, will be tested by combining with both natural insecticides such as the pyrethrins and synthetic pesticides and tested to determine if the mixtures are an effective method for controlling a number of commercially important insect pests.
