Aircraft flying through clouds may be subjected to in-flight ice accretion, which severely degrades the aerodynamic characteristics of an aircraft, leading to frequent incidents and occasionally to catastrophic accidents. The crash of Air France flight 447 from Brazil to France in June 2009 is just one sad example of the effect of icing. Prof. Kietzig and Newmerical Technologies International (NTI) propose to team up and obtain detailed data for supercooled large droplet impingement on fast moving surfaces to improve passenger safety.
