Devising methods for controlling the quantum state of physical systems has long motivated researchers searching for insight into the laws of nature, understanding the behaviour of materials, and advancing information processing and sensor technology. The Barclay research group develops new quantum technology by creating precisely designed optical components - nanophotonic devices - coupled to intrinsically quantum systems. These quantum systems arise from a diverse range of physical mechanisms, such as electron spins associated with impurities embedded in the device's constituent material, and mechanical fluctuations of nanostructures cooled to low temperatures. Harnessing the quantum properties of these devices is critical to demonstrate transformative technology for low energy consumption information processing, and sensitive detection of magnetic and electric fields, mechanical displacements, and mass at the single molecule level.
