We are applying for funding to purchase an instrument that is capable of both qualitative and quantitative analysis of compounds. The instrument is a gas chromatograph coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS). The mass spectrometer has two ionization sources, i) a standard electron ionization source used to both identify unknown compounds through mass spectral fingerprinting and to determine how much material is present and ii) a softer chemical ionization source used to determine molecular mass and also used in the determination of how much material is present. The triple quadrupole mass spectrometer has the capability to operate in MS/MS mode which provides greatly improved signal-to-noise and specificity allowing one to determine "how much" of a given material is present even in very complex mixtures. This instrument will be used to support medicinal chemistry synthesis including probes for cancer detection, the characterization of anti-bacterial peptides, the determination of biomarkers of diseases such as breast and lung cancers, and the analysis of other very complex mixtures.
