Protein Purification Platform Upgrade for Structural Biology Research

My laboratory's primary focus is the structural determination of protein complexes by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. This research is funded by a 2011-2016 NSERC Discovery Grant and a 2011-2014 NSERC Discovery Accelerator Award. One of the most integral components of the workflow in this research environment is efficient and reproducible protein purification using a combination of manual and automated chromatography instruments. The chromatography equipment in the laboratory was purchased in 2001 with startup funds and a CFI New Opportunities award. Six months ago, the fraction collector robot on the only automated (AKTA FPLC) chromatography system failed. This proposal represents a request for funds to replace the fraction collector as well as a few minor maintenance items such as an ultraviolet lamp for the detector.
