Molecular architecture in gene expression and virus-host interactions

The aim of my research is to understand how proteins assemble into an architecture that is well suited to a specific function. The atomic level of detail required to visualize differences in protein assemblies is achieved by using techniques such as NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography that are available locally to my laboratory. The three aims in my proposal cover three general areas of cell signaling. The first aim examines how a pair of Sox9 proteins working together is capable of activating a different developmental program in a cell than one Sox9 protein working alone. The second aim examines the nature of the interactions between a bacterial transcription factor and its promoters that drive antibiotic resistance. The third aim examines how a bacterial genetic program is altered during viral infection by a protein called ea8.5. The basic research described in this proposal will be used to understand the new aspects of cell signaling and help design selective therapies against disease.
