Our aim is to develop scientific instrumentation that is capable of observing very rapid structural transformations in materials at atomic to nanometer spatial resolution (through both diffraction and real-space imaging). Many essential atomic to nanometer scale processes in materials such as diffusion, nucleation and growth can occur on timescales around one billion times faster than video rate imaging can capture. Such processes cannot be observed with conventional instruments. Thus, the current proposal seeks to see what has never before been seen.
