Replacement of a centrifugal vacuum concentrator

A vacuum centrifugal evaporator is a vital component of any laboratory working in areas of biochemistry and molecular biology research. Thus, highly qualified personnel trained in these areas at the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale (IRBV, affiliated with the Département de sciences biologiques of Université de Montréal) frequently require this equipment. A vacuum concentrator comprises a centrifuge, a solvent trap and a vacuum pump. The common equipment laboratory of our Institute currently has a vacuum concentrator fitted with two centrifuges that has decayed rapidly over the past year after 20 years of heavy use. It shows signs of advanced corrosion, problems with vacuum and one of its two centrifuges is out of order. Due to its age, it is impossible to repair this equipment because parts are no longer available. This instrument is heavily used on a daily basis by students working in the laboratories of all the coapplicants and also serves as an occasional resource for other IRBV laboratories. Funds are therefore requested to purchase a large capacity incubator-shaker adapted to accommodate all our applications, including DNA manipulation and evaporation of samples diluted in acids and bases.
