A large incubator-shaker to support research in plant biology

Incubator-shakers are vital components of laboratories working in microbiology and molecular biology research. Thus, highly qualified personnel trained in these areas at the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale (IRBV, affiliated with the Département de sciences biologiques of Université de Montréal) frequently require this equipment. Our Institute currently has a large incubator-shaker which is 18 years old and has become unreliable and costly to maintain. This equipment is located in our common biochemistry equipment laboratory. It is heavily used by students working in the laboratories of the applicants and also serves as an occasional resource for other IRBV laboratories. In the recent years, this incubator-shaker has been having increasingly frequent problems of temperature and rotation speed control. These problems cause unacceptable delays in our students' research activities. Funds are therefore requested to purchase a large capacity incubator-shaker adapted to accommodate all our applications (cultures of different sizes grown at various temperatures). This grant will allow us to replace the current failing equipment.
