英文摘要
The research program to be supported by the requested equipment is one that is new and unique in Canada: addressing how marine microbes breakdown seaweed cell walls. Our approach moves through the isolation of new and efficient seaweed degrading marine bacteria from the coast of British Columbia, sequencing and annotation of these microbial genomes, the cloning of genes that are targeted on the basis of their hypothesized role in seaweed polysaccharide degradation, and finally the intensive structural and functional study of proteins encoded by such genes. Overall, this research program holds the potential to yield new information regarding the turnover of photosynthetically fixed carbon in our oceans - a critical issue to ocean health. An anticipated practical outcome, however, is to inform the creation of processes aimed at the conversion of seaweed biomass into biofuel and to provide specific tools so that this can be achieved.
