Motion perception in a full-immersion virtual environment

Motion processing is one of the most fundamental perceptual functions as it is essential to avoid potentially dangerous events and is used by humans to allow interaction with the environment. The research program proposed here is a continuation of our previous work on basic aspects of motion processing using a full-immersive virtual environment (FIVE). The program proposes among other things to study the effects of optic-flow on postural control. Optic-flow is the type of motion that is perceived from elements in the visual scene while moving in the environment and is considered to be ecological. Mechanisms responsible for perceiving optic flow will be studied as a function of normal development and visual field characteristics. Furthermore, the capacity for tracking multiple moving elements in a large three-dimensional volumetric space will also be assessed within the immersive virtual reality environment. The research derived from this program will help us better understand how we perceive, integrate and how we can use dynamic visual information in large field three-dimensional conditions similar to some naturalistic contexts.
