Structure and kinematics of the Marmion Shear Zone and implications for Archean tectonics and gold mineralization at the Osisko Hammond Reef Gold Project.

The Hammond Reef gold deposit near Atikokan, Ontario, lies in an unusual tectonic setting. Unlike most of the Abitibi gold, which is deposited along fault zones and often related to fluid migration from magmatic or metamorphic systems in greenstones and associated metasediments. The Hammond Reef deposit is disseminated in an altered fracture zone within tonalitic gneiss. This fracture zone is sub-parallel and adjacent to the Marmion Shear Zone, a potentially large-scale Archean strike-slip structure. It is not known whether the alteration zone, and the gold deposit, formed due to activity of the Marmion Shear or are related to other processes and other tectonic events in the area.
