Eye and head tracking during tactile stimulation

Nature of the work: My multisensory integration laboratory explores the multisensory interactions that underlie our perception of time and space, and our location and motion within those frameworks. Although my laboratory has sophisticated methods of providing and controlling visual, auditory, vestibular and tactile stimuli, the spatial locations of these stimuli need to be related to an observer's body (broadly defined to include the eyes and head, as well as the trunk and limbs). Although we can to some extent control the positions of the eyes and head by simply asking subjects to look at a target or point a head-mounted laser in a particular direction, this only allows us to roughly estimate where they are looking and relies on participants being compliant and reasonably accurate. Emerging studies from my laboratory suggest that the representation of the body involves a strong visual component. As a consequence of this, the perception of stimuli relative to the body is affected by errors in an observer's knowledge of the positions of their eyes and head. In order to make precise conclusions and to carry out more sophisticated experiments in which eye and head position are manipulated in three dimensions, it is essential that precise measurements of eye and head position are obtained. This requires an eye and head tracking system.
