Chemicals, whether found in food products, commercial goods or pharmaceutical formulations, can be toxic because they adversely affect normal functions. Humans, like other animals, have an ability to metabolize xenochemicals into other forms that make them easier to eliminate, but they can be even more toxic. An increased understanding of the toxicity of metabolic products could help assess environmental risk and inform regulations to improve safety.
