My NSERC supported research is directed towards synthesis and characterization of solid-state responsive materials, with primary focus on thermoelectric and magnetocaloric materials. Thermoelectric materials generate voltage when subject to a temperature gradient (Seebeck effect) or perform cooling/heating when current is passed through them (Peltier effect). Magnetocaloric materials respond by changing their temperature when the magnetic field is varied and, thus, can be used for magnetic cooling. While addressing fundamental aspects of research such as the discovery of new phases, the two projects are also of practical importance as they focus on the development of novel materials with useful physical properties.
