The research of Drs. Y. Mozharivskyj, J. Cotton, J. Preston and F. Lightstone, funded by the NSERC grants, focuses on preparation and characterization of high-performance thermoelectric materials, as well as design and manufacturing of thermoelectric generators. Industrial importance of thermoelectric materials lies in their ability to generate voltage under a temperature gradient (Sebeeck effect). Since more than half of all the energy generated by the mankind is lost as waste heat, thermoelectric materials are expected to play an important role in recovering some of this lost energy.
