Aptamer-facilitated technologies for cell activity modulation and imaging

One of the most challenging tasks of bioanalytical chemistry and biotechnology is the replacement of animal- or hybridoma-made antibodies with artificial competitors that can be easily selected and chemically synthesized. Such competitors are aptamers - single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotides that can bind to a variety of different targets ranging from small molecules to proteins with high affinity and specificity. Aptamers are ligands with big potential to change the field of affinity probes and to replace antibodies as diagnostic and therapeutic reagents. In contrast to antibodies, they do not trigger an immune response. They are thermostable and can be chemically synthesized for lower price, have better batch-to-batch reproducibility, and have the simplicity of chemical modifications and integration in biosensors.
