This proposal requests funding to purchase the optical components required to upgrade an existing microscope with capabilities for polarized light, differential interference contrast and fluorescence microscopy. These optical microscopy capabilities are essential for the characterization of functional micro and nanostructured materials and will yield information that is currently unavailable to the applicant and co-applicants through other techniques, such as the anisotropy inherent to structured materials, the liquid crystalline behaviour of nanoparticles, or the distribution of fluorescent moieties in biomaterials.
