Micro- and Nanostructured Materials

Inspired by natures many examples of functional micro/nanostructures, my research focuses on developing new materials through fabrication and surface chemistry, and using microscopy to characterize how biological systems respond to them. This proposal leverages two technologies that my group has pioneered to produce functional micro/nanostructured materials: stress-induced film structuring and modular cellulose functionalization. My research projects employ these materials to understand cell-surface interactions, design better microenvironments for in-vitro cell culture, develop biosensors, and build materials to capture molecules. This innovative research will improve our approach to tissue engineering and deliver novel diagnostic assays for the detection of pathogens and diseases.
