The present grant application seeks support for a Galling Testing System (GTS) that will allow one to perform in depth tribological studies of coatings and surfaces at elevated temperatures. Galling is referred to also as "cold welding"; it occurs when one material surface in sliding contact with another, under high contact pressure, adheres to the other surface with such strong force that a part of one or both of the surfaces is torn away, and both surfaces become damaged when the parts slide together. Lubrication reduces galling tendency, but the property of "galling resistance" of a material refers to its resistance when the surface is clean and unlubricated. The GTS will be used to evaluate the tribological and friction phenomena as well as wear mechanisms, while simulating real-environment working conditions of mechanical components including different materials in contact and relative movement in controlled environments.
