Plasma treatment of materials has been shown as a very powerful technique to enhance surface tribo-mechanical properties. In collaboration with our industrial partner, we plan to explore the use of low pressure plasma to treat surfaces of abrasive particles, mainly aluminum oxide or zirconium oxide, to improve mechanical and tribological properties of the individual grains prior to mixing with bonding agent and baking to form a solid grinding wheel. We proposed to deposit hard protective coatings such as: TiC-based, TiN-based and CrN-based on oxides particles, to improve the tolls life. Those coatings posses higher hardness than oxides particles, therefore they should extend the cutting speed and toll fife. In particular, we will investigate the effect of different hard, protective coatings on mechanical and tribological properties of individual grains.
