Heavy oil/oilsands will be an important part of Canada's and the extended global supply. Almost one-third of the world's oil is in Canada in the form of heavy oil and bitumen or so called "oilsands". However, due to very high viscosities of these resources, conventional recovery techniques are not applicable. The current method of enhanced recovery or surface mining has significant environmental impacts such as tailings treatment, high water consumption, landscape alteration and inefficient land use. The sustainable technologies are in-situ oil sands recovery methods namely using heat-Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), using solvent-Vapor Extraction (VAPEX), and combination of the two (hybrid).
