Nanotechnology opens potentials for developing novel functional materials and innovative devices in the nanometer scale, however the development of the applications is still in the conceptual stage and practical examples of reliable techniques for the production of nano-devices are very rare. In this project, we plan integrating some mature technologies, such as anodization, nano-surface modification, nano-filling, grain refinement and texturization, to develop novel nano-designs for the manufacture of sensors of hydrogen and other gases, innovative biomaterials, and devices for separation of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The research on membranes will focus on efficient methods of separation of hydrogen from a mixture of other gases and capture of CO2. This approach has significance because it allows the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. Research on the innovative design of gas sensors plays an important role in environment monitoring and chemical process controlling. For example, hydrogen leak detection is of considerable importance because an explosive mixture can form if hydrogen leaks into air. Both aspects of the proposed research contribute to the realization of the future "hydrogen economy" and clean and safe energy.
