Two-phase flows are encountered in numerous engineering applications and their understanding help improve the design and consequently the performance of energy systems. For example, the combustion efficiency of liquid fuel in jet or diesel engines is controlled by the droplets formation and their subsequent vaporization. Therefore understanding liquid fuel breakup into drops is fundamental for the design of these combustion devices. Most of the principal applicant's (Dr. Birouk) research focuses on this area where his lab has two test rigs dedicated to carry out research from liquid injection, breakup and droplets formation to vaporization and subsequent combustion. These test facilities consist of a subsonic wind-tunnel and a pressure combustion vessel which have the capability to simulate engine test conditions.
